Welcome to the Embracing Light from the Darkness National Photographic Project!

We invite all Canadians interested in the art of photography to submit photographs that bring into sight the legacy of the Canadian residential school system with the hope for a future where the past is healed, reconciled and restored.

We also invite people from all corners of this country to monetarily support two education projects that currently assist Aboriginal young people in financial need in the Diocese of British Columbia to achieve their goals of post-secondary education.  The First Nations Computer Technology Fund and the Aboriginal Bursary seek to help the generations who follow the survivors of the residential school system move towards educational and economic independence. An article about this project has been published on the website of the Anglican Journal, the national newspaper of the Anglican Church of Canada.

Here are just a few examples of photographs you might consider submitting!

  • Portraits: individuals, couples, families, friends, acquaintances, or colleagues.
  • Landscapes: urban, rural, and the natural environment
  • Detail images: photos examining the smallest detail of any object expressing hope and restoration
  • Sacred places and objects
  • Family and friends gathering together in daily life
  • Intercultural events
  • Learning together:  preschools, elementary schools, high schools, university and college
  • Intergenerational mentoring and learning
  • Sharing cultural identities and traditions
  • Ancestral places and locations of spiritual significance
  • The reclamation, teaching and sharing of Aboriginal ancestral language
  • Technology in the education of First Nations children, youth and adults
  • Abstract or stylized images that provide the greatest impact of their message
  • Photographs that acknowledge the renaming of traditional First Nations territory  – such as renaming the Queen Charlotte Islands to Haida Gwaii

With the participation of Canadians from coast to coast, Embracing Light from the Darkness will enable The Bishop’s Gospel Choir of British Columbia to expand the Aboriginal Bursary and the First Nations Computer Technology Fund from Vancouver Island to other areas throughout British Columbia.

This national project has been developed and organized by the Bishop’s Gospel Choir of British Columbia, approved by the Anglican Diocese of British Columbia and supported by the Anglican Church of Canada
