Embracing Light from the Darkness

About the Project

Pain, Disrespect, Separation…
Healing, Reconciliation, Restoration…

These are a few of the words that surround and flow from the legacy of the Canadian Residential School system. Throughout Canada over 150,000 First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children were removed from their families and communities and forced to attend the schools. The far reaching impact of the Canadian Residential School system continues to be felt by subsequent generations of Aboriginal young people.

Embracing Light from the Darkness focuses on supporting the generations of First Nations youth who follow the years of the Residential Schools. This national initiative encourages all Canadians, and people from the whole global community, to consider how this part of Canadian history can best be expressed, communicated, and projected by way of photography.  And, in doing so, consider how, in the words of Shawn A-in-chut Atleo, National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, education can be “a tool of emancipation and support for the rebuilding of communities, families, culture, and language.”

We invite all Canadians to monetarily support the two education projects that assist Aboriginal young people in financial need - the First Nations Computer Technology Fund and the Aboriginal Bursary.  It is important to note that Choir Director Mary Rogers, all Choirs members, and all who are working for the Aboriginal Bursary and the First Nations Computer Technology Fund are volunteers – all funds donated go to support these two education initiatives.
