Aboriginal Bursary

The Aboriginal Bursary will be applicable to Aboriginal students in financial need throughout the Diocese of British Columbia. Whether the Aboriginal applicant wishes to pursue an academic degree at a post-secondary institution, enrol for a trades program, or learn the skills of a traditional art, they will be able to apply for funds from the bursary once a sustainable principle balance has been raised.

It is hoped that the first bursary will be awarded in time for the 2012 school year.

Your support of the Aboriginal Bursary will enable us provide greater assistance to Aboriginal students in the Diocese of British Columbia. With your help we hope to be able to expand this project into other areas of British Columbia.
The application criteria for this award will be as follows:

  1. Candidates must be of aboriginal ancestry that originates within the boundaries of the Diocese of British Columbia (Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands).  *boundary scope to be expanded, as able, to include additional areas of British Columbia
  2. Candidates must reside within the boundaries of the Diocese of British Columbia. *boundary scope to be expanded, as able, to include additional areas of British Columbia
  3. Candidates must be registered or commit to be registered in a post-secondary institution, vocational institute, or other continuing education program with the purpose of entering an occupational path. 
  4. The educational path must be such that a bursary would be of significant benefit for the student to excel in their chosen field of study.
  5. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated financial need.
  6. The application includes a requirement for a personal letter as to how the provision of the bursary will be of assistance to the student’s educational and employment/career goals.
  7. Only one award will be granted per applicant.

The following are NOT criteria that the applicant must meet:

  1. The applicant does not have to be a member of the Diocese of British Columbia or have any religious affiliation.
  2. There is no minimum Grade Point Average level or requirement for outstanding scholastic achievement.
